Years of Service Gifts Employees Actually Wear
The best years of service gifts for employees are garments they will wear, tiered by milestone: a cap or tee at one year, an embroidered layer at five, a jacket at ten and up. The year goes on the sleeve or under the logo, small. Below: our ladder, the decoration prices, and the proof dates for December and January awards.
Give each milestone its own garment and its own small mark. One year gets a cap or tee, five years an embroidered quarter zip or polo, ten years an embroidered soft shell jacket, and 20 and 25 years a jacket with a back piece or a fully custom piece. Decorated orders target 7 to 10 business days from proof approval.
01Why a garment beats a plaque
Because it gets used. A pin goes on a lanyard nobody wears. A plaque goes on a shelf. A good jacket gets worn all winter, for years. Pins and plaques are the default, and in our view that is the problem. The fix is simple: give people the thing they would have bought anyway, made better and marked with the year.
The catch is that the garment has to be good. A boxy tee with a giant logo does not get worn. We wrote about why company shirts end up in a drawer, over at PILLAR, and it applies here: fit, fabric and restraint decide whether a gift gets worn.
02Service awards are not a company anniversary
A service award honors a person. A company anniversary honors the business. When the company turns 25, everyone gets the same piece, which is what a company anniversary collection is for. A service award is individual. The 10 year honoree should get something the 1 year honoree does not, and the gap should show in the garment. If both land in one year, the anniversary piece goes to everyone and honorees get their tier piece on top.
03The milestone ladder we recommend
Tie each milestone to a garment category, and step the garment up as the years add up. This is our recommendation, not industry data.
| Milestone | Suggested piece | Decoration add ons from our list |
|---|---|---|
| 1 year | Cap or tee | Standard embroidery (up to 6,000 stitches) |
| 5 years | Quarter zip or polo | Standard left chest |
| 10 years | Soft shell jacket | Left chest plus a sleeve mark (its own design, $35 setup one time) |
| 20 years | Jacket with a jacket back piece | Jacket back at $55 up to 22,500 stitches |
| 25 years | Fully custom piece, or a jacket with metallic thread | Metallic thread at $1.25 per garment; fully custom is quoted |
Decoration only, per piece, from our published embroidery list. Garment cost is quoted separately.
One year: keep it simple
A cap or a heavyweight tee with the logo embroidered on the front. One year is about belonging, not prestige. If your team runs cold, an embroidered hoodie for the one year mark is a fair swap.
Five years: the first real layer
A quarter zip or polo with a clean left chest logo. People wear this one to client meetings, so the garment matters more than the decoration. Hold it to the standard of the polos in our own PILLAR line: a fit that works untucked and fabric that keeps its shape.
Going with the quarter zip? Our note on what to wear under a quarter zip is worth forwarding with the gift.
Ten years: a jacket
Ten years should feel expensive: an embroidered soft shell with a left chest logo and a small year mark on the sleeve. Start with our embroidered jackets and pick a color that works with jeans.
Twenty and twenty five years: the senior pieces
At 20 years, add a jacket back piece ($55 up to 22,500 stitches). At 25 years, put the year mark in metallic thread ($1.25 per garment) or go fully custom: a piece built from the fabric up in your colors, with a woven neck label and a printed hang tag. Fully custom gets a pre production sample to approve.
04How the year shows on the garment
Small, and somewhere other than the center of the chest. A discreet sleeve hit or a small mark under the logo reads as an honor. A giant 10 across the back reads as a costume.
Treat each milestone mark as its own design. The 5, 10 and 20 year marks are separate files, so each carries a one time $35 setup. Reorder files are kept on record, so next year's 5 year honorees reuse the file with no new setup.
Metallic thread on the senior marks is a quiet upgrade at $1.25 per garment. For a name or year set in text, keyboard lettering is on our list at $12. Every order gets a proof showing placement, size and thread colors before production.
A plaque goes in a drawer. A jacket with the year on the sleeve goes to every job site and every school pickup.
05What the decoration costs: a worked example
The decoration bill is usually small next to the garment. Here is the math from the embroidery prices we publish.
Say your December award lunch has 30 honorees across every tier, and all of them get the same left chest logo on polos and quarter zips. On our list both price as shirts (the quote confirms each style), so 30 pieces fall in the 24 to 47 tier at $7.25 each: 30 times $7.25 is $217.50 in decoration for the logo.
The year mark on the sleeve is a separate design. It prices per piece by its own quantity (how many people get that mark), and the quote confirms that number. Add $35 setup for each new mark. Jacket backs and metallic thread stack on from the table above. Garment cost is quoted separately. There are no minimums, so a tier with two honorees is fine.
06When to order for a December or January award
Decorated orders target 7 to 10 business days from proof approval. Fully custom pieces run about 45 days door to door. Count back from the award date.
Door to door, built from the fabric up. The timeline is confirmed on the first call.
These are targets, not promises, and they skip Thanksgiving Thursday and Friday (Nov 26 and 27) as finish dates.
| Award | Approve the proof by | Target finish |
|---|---|---|
| Early December | Wed Nov 18, 2026 | About Tue Dec 1 to Fri Dec 4 |
| Mid December | Wed Dec 2, 2026 | About Fri Dec 11 to Wed Dec 16 |
| January all hands | Mon Jan 11, 2027 | About Wed Jan 20 to Mon Jan 25 |
| 25 year fully custom | About Fri Jan 15, 2027 | For a Mon Mar 1, 2027 presentation |
Leave room for shipping. If awards are part of a bigger year end push, see holiday gift order dates.
07How to run the program
Run it like a reorder, not a one off. After year one, it is a list and a proof.
- Pull the list earlyNames, milestones and sizes, early November for a December event.
- Lock the ladderKeep the same garment per tier for a few years, so the 10 year jacket means something.
- Approve each mark onceOne time $35 setup per mark. Approve the proof and the file stays on record.
- Reorder next yearSend the new list, we send a proof, no new setup.
Orders are packed by size and name, so you get employee gifts packed and ready to hand out.
Questions HR teams ask
What should we give at 5 years versus 10 years?
At 5 years, an embroidered quarter zip or polo. At 10 years, step up to an embroidered soft shell jacket with a small year mark on the sleeve.
Should the year be on the garment?
Yes, but small. A discreet sleeve hit or a small mark under the logo reads as an honor and keeps the piece wearable outside work.
What should we budget for each tier?
Decoration only, from our published list: standard left chest embroidery on shirts runs $10.75 down to $5.25 per piece depending on quantity, a jacket back is $55 up to 22,500 stitches, metallic thread is $1.25 per garment, and each new milestone mark has a one time $35 setup. Garment cost is quoted separately.
How do we handle sizes when the gift is a surprise?
Our advice is to ask quietly through managers, who usually know, or plan a short exchange window after the presentation and reorder the swaps.
Can we reorder the same design next year?
Yes. Reorder files are kept on record, so next year's 5 year honorees reuse the same mark with no new setup. Send the new names and sizes and we send a proof.
How far ahead should we order for a December presentation?
Decorated orders target 7 to 10 business days from proof approval. For early December, approve proofs by Wed Nov 18, 2026. For mid December, approve by Wed Dec 2, 2026. Those are targets, not promises.
Give the year a garment, not a plaque.
Tell us the award date and we will work back to the proof date that targets it, tier by tier.
