Clothing Brand Minimum Order Quantity: Launch Past the MOQ
The first number a factory gives a new brand is a minimum. It should be the last number you plan around.
A clothing brand minimum order quantity is the smallest run a factory will cut per style, and often per color. Through PILLAR Prints & Embroidery there is no minimum on either path: decorated blanks in 7 to 10 business days from proof approval, or fully custom pieces in about 45 days door to door. Size your first drop by real demand, not by a factory rule.
What a clothing brand minimum order quantity actually is
It is the floor on a production run. Below it, the factory will not cut your style.
What founders rarely hear is how the floor multiplies. A minimum is usually quoted per style, and very often per color too. So a single tee in three colors is three minimums, not one. Add a hoodie and a hat and the real commitment is several times the first figure you saw.
Read every quote as minimum, times styles, times colors, and you will know the real size of the check before you sign anything.
Why the minimum is the wrong number to plan a first drop around
Because a clothing brand minimum order quantity describes the factory's costs, not your customers. A minimum exists for honest reasons. Fabric gets bought and dyed as a color lot. A cutting table gets set up for your pattern. Those setup costs are real, and a factory spreads them over enough units to make the run worth it.
None of that tells you how many people will buy your shirt. When a founder sizes the first drop to clear a minimum, they are letting a cutting table set their inventory. The result is boxes of the slow color in the closet and no money left for the second design.
Your first drop should be sized by the people waiting for it, not by a roll of fabric on someone else's floor.
A first drop has one job. It tells you what your audience actually wants, at what fit, in which color. And what wins that first customer is quality, not volume. They will judge the quality markers a buyer checks first, the fabric, the stitching, how it hangs after a wash, long before they care how many units you made.
Two ways to launch with no minimum
We take the wall away on both paths. What changes between them is how much of the garment is yours and how long the clock runs.
Decorated blanks, decorated to your art
This is the fastest way to test a design. You pick a quality stock garment, and we deliver it decorated with embroidery, DTF transfers, sublimation or screen printing on a quality blank. Decorated orders run 7 to 10 business days from proof approval. Put three designs in front of your audience, see which one moves, and reorder that one.
Fully custom, built from the fabric up
Here the garment itself is yours. We make fully custom pieces made direct with our manufacturers, and you choose the fabric, cut, colors and fit, plus woven neck labels, printed hang tags and branded packaging. Fully custom runs about 45 days door to door, with production alone taking 30 to 35 days, and we confirm the timeline on the first call before anything is ordered.
If you are still weighing which one fits your line, we wrote a full guide on the custom build or decorated stock decision. Here is the short version side by side.
| Decorated blanks | Fully custom | |
|---|---|---|
| What you control | The art, placement, method and thread or ink colors | The garment itself: fabric, cut, colors and fit |
| The clock | 7 to 10 business days from proof approval | About 45 days door to door, confirmed on the first call |
| Minimum through us | None | None |
| Best first use | Testing designs and reading demand | A proven design that has earned its own garment |
| What carries your name | The print or stitch on the chest, sleeve or back | The garment, the woven neck label, the hang tag and the packaging |

How many units to make the first time
Make as many as you can name buyers for, and a little more. That is our honest answer to the MOQ for a clothing startup question, and it is the reason ordering with no minimum matters at all.
Start with the people you can count. Preorders are the cleanest signal, because money has changed hands. After that, your email list, your regulars, the followers who replied to the sketch. Add a small cushion spread across sizes, because the size curve is the part everyone guesses wrong the first time.
Then use the speed. A decorated run on a quality blank turns in 7 to 10 business days from proof approval, so you can run a short preorder window and order to the count. We keep your reorder files on record, so the second run of the shirt that sold out is a quick approval, not a fresh start.
Our recommendation for most first drops: test on decorated blanks, then move the design that proved itself into a fully custom piece with your own label. If your strongest idea is a pattern rather than a logo, the custom path covers that too, and we have written about turning a repeat pattern into a garment.
What quantity still changes
Price per piece. No minimum means you are never forced to buy more, but quantity still moves the unit cost of decoration. These are decoration prices per shirt for standard embroidery up to 6,000 stitches. The garment is quoted separately.
| Quantity | Embroidery per shirt |
|---|---|
| 1 to 8 | $10.75 |
| 9 to 23 | $8.50 |
| 24 to 47 | $7.25 |
| 48 to 71 | $6.00 |
| 72 and up | $5.25 |
Figure 2 Shirt embroidery per piece, decoration only
If your real count lands at 22, it is worth knowing that 24 sits in the next tier. A new logo setup is $35 one time, and after that your file is on record for every reorder. Hats, bags and add ons have their own lines on our embroidery tiers. Screen print, DTF, sublimation and fully custom pricing all come through the quote, because they depend on the art and the garment.
The label is what makes it a brand
A logo on someone else's shirt is merch. A garment with your name sewn into the neck is a brand. When founders search for private label minimums, that is usually what they mean: your label, your garment.
On the fully custom path, the label is part of the build. A woven neck label, a printed hang tag, an insert card and branded packaging all ship together, and orders can be packed by size and name so they arrive ready to hand out or ship. If you have never specified one, start with how a woven neck label gets made.
It is the same standard we hold our own PILLAR line to. Look at the PILLAR pieces customers come back for and check the neck, the tag and the fit before you look at the chest. That is where a brand earns the second purchase.
MOQ questions from first time founders
What is a typical MOQ for a clothing brand?
There is no single typical number. A minimum order quantity varies by factory, by style and by fabric, and many factories set it per color as well as per style. Ask every factory for the minimum per style and per color in writing, and ask whether a spread of sizes counts toward it.
Can I start a clothing brand with no minimum order?
Yes. Through PILLAR Prints & Embroidery there is no minimum on either path. You can order a single decorated piece on a quality blank, or a fully custom piece built from the fabric up with your own label, and scale up once you know what sells.
How many shirts should a first drop be?
As many as you can name buyers for. Count preorders, your email list, regulars and people who have already said yes, then add a small cushion across sizes. Without a minimum you can reorder what sells instead of guessing big up front.
Do I need a tech pack to get a quote with you?
No. Send what you have, whether that is sketches, reference photos, a logo or a garment you like, and we work out the details with you on the first call. A tech pack helps, but it is not the price of admission.
How long does a fully custom first run take?
About 45 days door to door for fully custom, with production alone running 30 to 35 days. We confirm the timeline on the first call before anything is ordered. Decorated orders on stock garments run 7 to 10 business days from proof approval.
Can I add my own neck label and hang tags?
Yes. Fully custom pieces can carry a woven neck label, a printed hang tag, insert cards and branded packaging, and orders can be packed by size and name so they are ready to hand out or ship to your customers.
Make the first drop the size of your audience.
Send the design, the styles and a rough count, and we will lay out both paths with no minimum on either.
